Do you consider The Varsity weird?
President Barack Obama, who visited the classic Midtown burger/chili dog joint last month, joined former commander in chiefs Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton in having been drawn to the restuarant.
But is the world’s largest drive-in located at 61 North Avenue weird? CNBC apparently thinks so as it included The Varsity among its list of America’s 20 Weirdest Restaurants. Wrote CNBC:
Carhops at the world’s largest drive-in (including a young Nipsy Russell) have been greeting customers at their car windows with “What’ll ya have?” since 1928. The Varsity is pure 20th-century Americana, and the menu remains classic drive-in, not straying far from burgers, dogs, fries, colas and shakes, and their famous fried pies.
