The New York Police Department will be increasing security at New York City movie theaters following an overnight shooting at a Colorado showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in which 12 were killed and at least 50 injured. According to the Associated Press, a gunman threw tear gas into a midnight showing of the new film “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colorado, before opening fire on the crowd.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly issued the following statement Friday morning:
“As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is playing in the five boroughs.”
Kelly reported that the shooter had his hair and beard painted red and claimed he was the joker.
