This morning, we told you that state Rep. Scott Holcomb, D-Atlanta, was leaning more and more on that yanked video by his GOP opponent, Chris Boedeker, to raise questions among Republicans.
The 30-second spot never made it to TV – so far as we know – but has had a half-life on the Internet. In it, Boedeker edited video of Holcomb at the well of the House to make it seem that Holcomb was confessing to drug use while in the U.S. Army.
As the weekend began, Holcomb received this Tweeted endorsement from Erick Erickson of Redstate.com:
“I’m proud to support Democrat Scott Holcomb for re-election in the Georgia State House. Better an honest Democrat than a lying fool.”
But more GOP shoes were dropping even as we wrote that. Over at Todd Rehm’s Georgia Pundit, Boedeker’s Republican primary opponent, gynecologist Carla Roberts, this morning condemned the fellow she said had falsely painted her as an abortionist who’d left her family.
She didn’t actually endorse Holcomb, if you read her post carefully, but she may not have needed to. A taste:
I have not uttered a word about Mr. Boedeker after the Republican voters in our district chose him as their nominee. Respecting the choice of the voters is why this country was founded. Indeed, after my exit, I would have preferred to stay silent rather than re-hash my defeat and naivete.
But Mr. Boedeker’s deplorable attempt to smear the reputation of a man who put his life on the line to protect American citizens has made my continued silence impossible. I believe it’s my duty, as an American, and as a Republican, to call out shameful behavior when I see it –especially from members of my own political party.
Updated at 2:45 p.m.: I sent Roberts an e-mail wondering if her statement was an endorsement of Holcomb. Here’s her reply:
“I am not endorsing Rep Scott Holcomb. It would be hard for me to vote for Mr. Boedeker to represent my district and my state. I may have to leave that ballot choice blank on Nov 6, 2012.”
This isn’t to say that Boedeker hasn’t been sinned against. Over at Get Schooled, my AJC colleague Maureen Downey says someone has created a fake Twitter account using Boedeker’s name. One fake Tweet:
A lunch lady with a textbook and a photocopier could replace any teacher.
It’s rough out there, people.
