Oconee Fire and Rescue responded to a ruptured natural gas line on August 20 at approximately 11:03 a.m. The ruptured line was located at 1090 Hog Mountain Road.

Residents should be aware of how to handle a natural gas leak should one occur in their area. Natural gas leaks may be detected by a distinctive odor, an unusual hissing sound near gas appliances or gas lines, blowing dirt, bubbling creeks or ponds, dry spots in moist areas or dead plants surrounded by live plants near a gas line. In the case of a suspected leak citizens should leave the immediate area, call 9-1-1 and do not do anything that might ignite an explosion such as lighting a match, operating an electrical switch or using a telephone inside a building where a leak is suspected.
