The National Federation of Independent Businesses has released it’s legislative endorsements, and the list reveals much more about NFIB than it does those on the list.
The first Senator at the top of this list is none other than Don Balfour (R-GA Power). Balfour, as you know, is the Senator that sponsored SB 31, the law that now has small businesses and individual rate payers giving Georgia Power $1 Billion dollars in advance profits for the new Vogtle nuclear reactors that are just beginning construction. We’re paying, but large commercial customers were exempt from paying under Balfour’s bill.
“Independent” implies small businessmen, and many of them are duped into supporting this organization and others under that guise. Many “independent” business are now paying for the guaranteed profits of a regulated monopoly that their larger businesses were exempt from. Note in the release below how many times small businesses are mentioned. Small to NFIB apparently means “can barely afford a quality lobbyist”.
Also, Balfour has that tiny problem of his pending Senate ethics investigation, found by the Senate ethics committee to have had “substantial cause” to have violated Senate ethics rules and possibly Georgia law.
But NFIB doesn’t seemed to care about that. Don Balfour delivers for them, as do these other incumbents. Insiders are scratching insiders backs, and you poor pesky grassroots voters are just supposed to shut up and be glad they’re all there.

ATLANTA, July 16, 2012 – The National Federation of Independent Business, Georgia’s leading small-business association, said today it has endorsed candidates in 16 legislative primary races. The endorsements were made by NFIB/Georgia SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, which is comprised exclusively of NFIB members.
The primary will be Tuesday, July 31; the general election, Tuesday, Nov. 6.
“NFIB supports candidates who understand how important it is to reduce burdens on small business,” said Kyle Jackson, state director of NFIB/Georgia. “These candidates have consistently supported less taxation, worked diligently to improve our unemployment comp system and embraced meaningful regulatory reform.”

NFIB’s endorsement is critical to these campaigns. Small business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB has pledged it will activate its grassroots network on behalf of these campaigns. NFIB’s political support is based on the candidates’ positions and records on small business issues.
