The ribbon has been cut, and it’s just a few more hours until the months-long detour around Cogburn Road will end. Milton’s first big project on its own has replaced a bridge local residents say must be at least 70 years old.

Hitson Construction replaced the bridge that spanned Cooper Sandy Creek between Bethany Bend and Webb Road with an arched culvert. Public Works Director Carter Lucas said it will be able to handle the 10,000 vehicles a day that were crossing it in 2009 when a survey put it at the top of the list of projects. The bridge project cost $478,020.39.

Ralph Sims, who lives just up the street from the construction site, said he expects the traffic will be up to 15,000 vehicles a day, as it has always been a “cut through” route to avoid GA 9. With the addition
