We have some blood-letting in the Republican race in the 12th District fight to face down U.S. Rep. John Barrow.
This afternoon, Maria Sheffield, who polled last in Tuesday’s vote but did well in rural portions of the district, endorsed state Rep. Lee Anderson of Grovetown in the Aug. 21 runoff against Augusta businessman Rick Allen.
From the press release, quoting Sheffield:
“The number one industry in GA 12 is agriculture. I have confidence Lee Anderson will represent our family farms in a manner which will get the EPA and its unnecessary and burdensome regulations off their farms and allow our farmers to do what they do best – grow food and feed people.
“I have had the chance to see that Lee Anderson is pro-life, and like me, deeply committed to proclaiming the Christian Faith. I am impressed that Lee Anderson is unapologetic in standing for and pro-actively proclaiming that Christians have both a right and responsibility to be engaged in government and public policy.
The electrons from Sheffield’s email were still warm when this reaction came from Chip Lake, strategist for the Allen campaign:
“While we would have loved to have Maria Sheffield’s endorsement, we had no interest in meeting the $50,000 price tag that she put on it.”
Kathryn Ballou, serving as a spokeswoman for Sheffield, sent the following response:
”Chip was not in the room when Maria had a positive meeting with Rick Allen. Maria had a one-on-one meeting with Lee Anderson and her debt was not mentioned.
“This statement reflects back on Chip Lake, demonstrates his character, and the only person hurt with this statement is Rick Allen. The only person who this statement – by Chip Lake – has helped is John Barrow.
“Republicans are sick and tired of this type of negative politics by overpriced consultants.”
