A former Lowcountry fire chief was laid to rest Thursday.  Sixty-nine-year-old Clayton Ellis was the first paid fire chief by the Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire District.  He died Monday after a long battle with cancer.

If the turnout at St. John’s Lutheran Church Thursday was an indication of the lives former fire chief Clayton Ellis touched, it’s safe to say he made his mark in the Lowcountry.  A servant through both Beaufort County EMS and the Lady’s Island- St. Helena Fire District, he had a reputation for giving guys a chance…the kind of compassion you don’t forget.
