Since the first of July, the Riley family has been hosting an unexpected visitor at their Northford, Connecticut home – a homing pigeon.
“He’s adorable, but I’m sure someone must be looking for him,” said El Riley.
Their neighbor said that he has seen the pigeon around the house since thunderstorms hit the area two weekends ago.
“I’d imagine he veered off course then,” said Riley.
She explained that the yellow band on one of his legs has ’1991′ on it and some other writing and there is a dark blue band on his other leg.
According to Wikipedia, “The homing pigeon is a variety of domestic pigeon derived from the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia domestica) selectively bred to find its way home over extremely long distances.”
The homing pigeon can travel about 1,000 miles from its home so this pigeon could be from virtually anywhere this side of the Mississippi River.
