A Fort Stewart soldier was killed in Afghanistan Sunday, according to a 3rd Infantry Division release.

Spc. Bryant J. Luxmore, 25, died from injuries sustained during a firefight near Panjwai, the release stated. Luxmore was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in March for a nine-month tour.

On Sunday, Luxmore and other soldiers were on a dismounted patrol with Afghan National Security Forces when they came under enemy fire. Luxmore was fatally shot during the firefight, the release stated.

Luxmore had been in the Army for 14 months and was on his first deployment. He was posthumously promoted to corporal and awarded the Bronze Star, Purpal Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge.

He is survived by his wife and stepson.
