The Druid Hills High School boys’ soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss Thursday night at Columbus.
The Red Devils pushed No. 6 ranked Columbus to the brink in the Class AAA State Soccer Playoffs before coming up one shot short in a penalty kick shootout that went two full rounds.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in regulation and were still in the scoreless tie following the two five minute overtime periods.
Druid Hills had an opportunity to win on their fifth penalty kick, but the goaltender from Columbus made a great save with inches to spare to send the game into the second round of penalty kicks.
Columbus (15-2-1) was able to capitalize on the save and won the game 7-6 on its 10th penalty kick to advance in the state playoffs.
