Tara Plantation, an assisted living facility in Cumming, may be shut down by the Georgia Department of Community Health, according to a report by WSB-TV.

Deborah Smith, a state inspector said, “They were not properly safeguarding the safety of the residents.

During testimony at a licensing hearing, Smith said that she paid a surprise visit to the facility last December and found it to be inadequately staffed and lax in job screening of caregivers.

The television news station also reported that Smith stated the facility failed to conduct a background criminal check and tuberculosis screening of a caregiver.

Tara Plantation, is operated by Assisted Living Concepts (ALC), Inc., and owns four other facilities in Georgia, according to it’s Web Site.

WSB-TV released an e-mail from a representative of ALC stating, “ALC is confident of the facts showing Tara Plantation is complying with Georgia regulations.
