It had become almost a given that Hugh Acheson would be nominated as one of the country’s best chefs. Monday evening, the James Beard Foundation named him the best chef in the Southeast, a honor he shares with Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene.
Known first to Athenians for his award-winning Five Ten and The National restaurants, Acheson saw his food footprint widen as he appeared on Top Chef!, opened Empire State South in Atlanta and published the cookbook A New Turn in the South to great acclaim.
The cookbook won a James Beard award this past weekend.
