A 24-year-old motorcyclist died in a head-on collision on Bascomb Carmel Road in Woodstock Wednesday afternoon.
Derrick Ferree of Marietta collided with Giovanni Aragon-Mercado, 19, of Acworth who was driving a Lincoln Navigator and suffered no injuries near Bascomb Springs at approximately 5 p.m., said Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
“It appears Mercado fell asleep at the wheel,” Baker said. The preliminary findings show his SUV crossed the center and struck the motorcycle.
Baker also said there was no evidence at the scene to suggest Mercado was impaired.
Ferree was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta where he later died from his injuries.
The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident. No charges have been filed at this
